Tourism was down in May 2012. Unfortunately, at the Solar Boat and pyramids, some of the vendors were like jackals on a fresh kill — aggressive, loud, inconsiderate, pushy, and just wouldn’t take no for an answer. They were even disrespectful when our female guide intervened. Security in Egypt included an armed guard in civilian clothes throughout the trip, and two jeeps full of guards armed with automatic weapons when we were going through portions of the Sinai Peninsula. Our hotel in Cairo was on a main thoroughfare — with many Egyptians drinving throughout the night with one foot on the gas and one hand on the horn, it wasn’t the most restful nights.
