Share on TwitterShare on TumblrSubmit to StumbleUponSave on DeliciousDigg ThisSubmit to redditShare on MyspaceShare via email

Israeli tour guides and travel operators returned to Bethlehem last week as part of a new project by the Israel Ministry of Tourism and tourism authorities in the Palestinian Authority.

The initiative is a result of a joint request by travel guides, tourists, travel agencies and operators that Israeli tour guides be permitted to accompany travelers to religious and touristic sites during their visit to Bethlehem in the Palestinian Authority.

“We are thrilled travelers from around the world are now able to visit Bethlehem under Israeli guided tours,” says Arie Sommer, Commissioner for Tourism, North and South America. “We hope this initiative will garner new interest in tourism to Bethlehem.”

2.7 million tourists vacationed in Israel in 2009, making it the second-best year for tourism in Israel’s 60-year history, just 11% less than the all-time high of 3 million travelers set in 2008. More than 1.3 million travelers visited Bethlehem in the Palestinian Authority in 2009.
