Luxor Day Tour

Tour duration: 1 day
Tour operates: daily

Luxor Temple stands in the center of the town of Luxor on the East Bank. It was built mainly by Amenophis III in the 18th Dynasty to demonstrate the power of this New Kingdom pharaoh. The Luxor Temple was dedicated to Amun, the God of Thebes, his wife Mut and their son Khonsu (the Moon God). One of the two obelisks which originally stood in front of the Temple is now in the Place de la Concorde in Paris; a gift from the Egyptians, in 1836. The scale of Karnak surpasses every other pharaonic temple, with over 100 acres devoted to the gods (enough land to accommodate ten large European cathedrals). For 13 centuries successive pharaohs added their share to make this the most magnificent temple complex in the country and in the entire ancient world. Karnak Temple is a complex of temples, obelisks, pylons, courts, colonnades, halls, reliefs and sanctuaries. The most famous part is the Hypostyle Hall which contains 134 columns. Karnak was the center of worship of the Sun God Amun.

Itinerary
Day 1

You'll be picked up from your hotel in Cairo and transfered to the aiport for your flight to Luxor. Upon arrival meet and assist at Luxor Airport. We begin our Egypt day tour driving a short distance to the bridge connecting the West Bank where we proceed to the Valley of the Kings. Enter the tombs of The Great Pharoahs with exquisite colors on the walls still visible from thousands of years ago. Our morning is spent learning about the various tombs and how difficult it must have been to construct these hidden secrets. We'll stop to see the Colossi of Memnon, twin statues, faceless and mute, who sang at dawn, according to legend. Proceed to visit the tombs of the great Pharaohs, whose lives will take form again on the walls of their sepulchers. We visit the Valley of the Queens, sitting deep in a narrow gorge. So well preserved are these paintings that it is difficult to believe they were completed thousands of years ago. We'll spend time at the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir El-Bahari considered by many to be the finest building of antiquity in Egypt and certainly among the most impressive in the world. The temple is set in a great amphitheater and its three terraces echo the rock formations in the cliff behind. Hatshepsut was the first Egyptian woman to rule as Pharaoh and her reign spanned nearly 20 years. Walk through a sphinx-lined avenue, the temple is entered via monumental ramps that lead to three broad terraces flanked with porticos and rows of Doric columns. Fascinating carved reliefs adorn the second terrace depicting a maritime expedition to the land of Punt (Sudan) and the exotic gifts, such as ivory, ebony, wild cats and incense trees that the Queen of Punt sends back to Egypt. Transfer to Luxor airport for your flight to Cairo. Upon arrival to Cairo you'll be transfers to your hotel in Cairo.

Tour duration: 1 day

Prepare to be blown away by the magnificence of these massive temples. They are undisputedly one of the world's most breathtaking monuments, and Egypt’s second most visited touristic site. The relocation of the temples was a historic event in the 1960's. At that time, the temples were threatened by submersion in Lake Nasser when the High Dam was constructed. The Egyptian government with the support of UNESCO launched a world wide appeal to save these colossal landmarks. They were successfully dismantled and relocated to a spot 60 meters above the cliff where they had been initially built. The more famous of the two temples is dedicated to Ramses II and the smaller one to his favourite wife Nefertari.

In the 1960's the temples were moved by the Egyptian government with help from UNESCO to avoid being covered by the rising waters of Lake Nasser. Ramses II built the temples to honor himself, and here you’ll find impressive well preserved murals depicting his famous victory at the battle of Qadesh where Ramses II army defeated his enemies. North of the temple we’ll visit the Nefertrai Temple honoring Ramses II favorite wife and Queen Nefertai among other 200 wives and concubines.
